FLORENCE, AL – The Department of Foreign Languages at the 国产AV will have Germanfest and Germany on Campus this month.
Germanfest will be from noon until 2 p.m. at the Memorial Amphitheatre on Thursday. This is the ninth year the German Club has had this event, and the celebration includes a taste of German food, lively German music, and plenty of photo props. Participants are also able to try grilled German sausage, sauerkraut, red cabbage, spätzle, which are German noodles, and chocolate desserts. Free t-shirts will also be given to the first 80 attendees.
Germanfest “is a great opportunity for people to get a small taste of traditional German culture and learn more about modern Germany at the same time,” said Dr. Rebecca Linam, advisor to the German Club and lecturer in German in the Department.
Later in October, on October 20, the German Club is also having Germany on Campus, thanks to a grant from the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. This is the fourth year for the event at UNA and is scheduled for 9 a.m. until noon on Oct. 20 in the banquet halls of the Guillot University Center. This interactive browse fair features German companies, internship opportunities, study abroad funding, and research opportunities in Germany.
German companies expected to attend Germany on Campus include Mercedes-Benz, Hago Automotive, RAPA, EBZ SysTec, and Schönox, as well as the Alabama Germany Partnership with information on all German companies within Alabama.
“For business majors, all of the attending companies need employees in HR, accounting, management, and other areas,” said Dr. Linam. “History majors can learn how German can help them in research and graduate school. Communication majors will be able to expand their job market to Europe and beyond with German. For some opportunities, you don’t even have to know German, such as CBYX, a fully funded program that will send students of any major to Germany for a year of language classes, study, and an internship with a German company.”
The German Club will be at the Germany on Campus event to give out free German books, samples of German chocolate, and t-shirts to the first 200 attendees.
A German history poster exhibit will also be at the browse fair, where UNA students will present their research posters to the attendees. Students in attendance from area high schools will also engage in an oral history competition, a design-an-ad competition, and a video competition on why learning German is a valuable skill.
The community is also invited to Germany on Campus.
